PART 1
DOMAINE POMMERY

“The extraordinary history of the Domaine Pommery”

In 1958, Madame Pommery found herself at the helm of the Estate after her husband’s death, like many other women in Champagne. Thus began the prodigious journey of the Domaine Pommery, as she breathed in new life, broke the rules, and audaciously expanded the Maison through the creation of wines unlike any other at the time. Built on unassailable principles of quality, and strong of her knowledge of, and respect for, the importance of the terroirs, Madame Pommery set out to assemble an impressive collection of some of Champagne’s finest vineyards, securing a legacy rooted in excellence, very much alive to this day.

“In 1874, Pommery Nature was the first brut champagne to meet commercial success

Madame Pommery was also a visionary and, in matters of taste, leaps ahead of her time. It was she who created Pommery Nature in 1874, the first brut champagne to meet commercial success, thereby breaking with a long tradition of very sweet wines, establishing a new norm for Champagne. She imprinted her personality and femininity on her champagnes, focusing on purity and finesse, a trademark of Pommery wines perpetuated today.

Ten years later, In July 1868, Madame Pommery launched what would be Reims’ largest construction project in a century: the transformation of the chalk pits into wine cellars. The project was gargantuan in size, mobilizing hundreds and taking over ten years to complete. A decade after it began, the domain featured its now iconic and expansive new buildings, 25 hectares of new vineyards, and over 11 miles of interconnected galleries that linked up the 60 chalk pits.

The Pommery house and Art

Since the mid-19th century, Madame Pommery’s pioneering spirit materialized through her many undertakings for the house, from the construction of the Domaine Pommery in Reims to the invention of Champagne Brut in 1874, and more personally, through her love, and committed support, for the arts.

A century later, and since 2002, the house of Pommery has reconnected with its artistic tradition by opening the domain, and the Gallo-Roman chalk pits, to artists from around the world. A unique and bustling underground meeting place of history and modernity, these ancient underground spaces now welcome contemporary artists, and open an artistic parenthesis under the direction of constantly evolving curators.

With its commitment to art and unparalleled corporate sponsorship, Pommery is more than a Champagne house, neither a museum nor an institution, celebrating excellence and innovation.
